Doubting Yourself In The Face Of Change?

Embarking on a new path in life can introduce feelings of fear, anxiety, and grief for what has been left behind. And if we lack confidence and support in taking the next step forward, it can compromise our ability to adapt and be resilient.

Anxiety often accompanies significant life transitions. Whether we’re having a new experience or letting go of what was, there is a lot of pressure to do things the “right” way. Many of us feel overwhelmed or even paralyzed in our decision-making ability. It’s common to lose sleep, appetite, and routine security when moving from one chapter to the next.

At Lumin, we understand that the journey is just as important as the destination. By offering you support, validation, and coping skills, our therapists can help you process your transition and loss to have what you need to move forward.

Change Is A Normal—And Constant—Aspect Of Being Human

Life transitions take many shapes. Sometimes they are welcomed opportunities like getting married, beginning a family, starting a new career, or retiring. Other times, significant life changes come with grief and loss, as is often the case with ending a marriage, losing a job, or experiencing the death of a loved one. Among all of these scenarios, fear and anxiety are very common, leading to tension, stress, and the feeling that we’re alone. Shame is also prevalent—especially when it comes to getting divorced or losing a job—emphasizing a harmful inner critic.

Unfortunately, our culture doesn’t have many support systems in place to help people through very normal yet challenging transitions. Social media puts immense pressure on us to navigate obstacles in a certain way, often making us feel like we aren’t where we should be in our journey. Comparison culture perpetuates the idea that there is only one roadmap toward success and satisfaction, eventually creating a sense of inadequacy that further jeopardizes our confidence and decision-making.

But therapy has the power to transform your perspective and attitude. With the guidance of the highly trained and experienced experts at Lumin, you can learn to cope, adjust, and thrive following a big change or loss.

Lumin Specializes In Counseling For A Variety Of Life Transitions

Counseling provides you with concrete skills and strategies for navigating your life transition, no matter what obstacles come your way. As your therapist works to validate and normalize your experience, you can build self-confidence, self-compassion, and self-acceptance.

What To Expect

Therapy for life transitions is often solution-focused, identifying exactly where you are on your journey and what you need to adjust.

Part of our approach is to provide psychoeducation to help you understand how the mind and body respond to significant and/or sudden changes. This may include learning about trauma’s impact on the nervous system or information on the stages of grief.

We will then put theory into practice by providing concrete, actionable skills to enhance your coping and nervous system regulation. Depending on your needs and goals for therapy, we will incorporate behavioral, body-based, and/or solution-focused methods that will ultimately equip you with tools for overcoming anxiety and fear.

Our clients are intelligent, motivated individuals who benefit from practicing therapeutic skills through the use of workbooks and take-home exercises. Applying these skills outside of the counseling space can reinforce progress, expedite the time spent in therapy, and ultimately bolster your ability to confidently face your life’s transitions.

Big life changes can present any number of obstacles, but this, too, shall pass. The self-care, validation, and skills available through counseling are all you need to navigate grief, loss, change, transition, and life’s ups and downs. Our therapists are here to support you in trusting the process—and yourself—as you take the next step.

Still Unsure If Counseling Is Right For You?

If the transition I’m experiencing is just a normal part of life, why do I need therapy?

While aspects of change, loss, and transition are part of being human, coping skills are learned, not innate. The support and guidance of a therapist can provide you with life-changing tools and perspectives to help you better understand your unique transition and what you need to reduce feelings of fear and anxiety. Finding a meaningful support network is essential to the growth and healing process—and it starts with therapy.

I don’t have time for counseling.

It’s understandable to have worries about time constraints, especially if you are adjusting to a new routine or dealing with additional responsibilities following your transition. However, counseling is actually an opportunity to get your time back. By making time for yourself amid a busy transition and learning skills to navigate all of life’s challenges, you will free up the time and energy anxiety and fear have taken from you.

Furthermore, our counseling services are available online via a HIPAA-compliant platform with evening and weekend times available.

I noticed you don’t take insurance; I’d rather work with a life transitions therapist in my network.

As we like to say, you can’t put a price tag on a healthy, functional mental state. Our therapists value patient privacy and typically don’t work from pathologizing models, making insurance coverage incompatible with our services.

If you have out-of-network benefits, we would happily offer you a superbill to submit for reimbursement.
